Nigerian languages don’t have any benefits – Peter Okoye claims

Date:

Afrobeats singer and half of the defunct P-Square duo, Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has claimed that Nigeria’s indigenous languages don’t have much values.

The singer made the claim after a fan asked him whether his kids are also fluent in Igbo after he boasted about their proficiency in French.

Okoye, who is currently on vacation in Paris, France, said watching his children speak French fluently makes him consider purchasing a property in the city.

“Still in Paris! Watching my kids speak French so effortlessly makes me think… maybe it’s time to own a crib here in Paris,” he wrote on X.

A fan then asked, “Hope they can speak Igbo, too?” To which, the singer replied, “And who naija language help? Make I hear word abeg.”

His statement earned backlash, with many berating him for making such remarks despite infusing Igbo and other Nigerian languages like Yoruba, in most of his songs and profiting from the commercial appeals of the languages.
