2027: 'Our silence not sign of weakness' – NDC on feud with ADC

Date:

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has spoken on the escalating feud with the African Democratic Congress, ADC, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Trust TV's Day Break, the National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, Osa Director, said there were no ongoing alliance talks between the two parties and that the NDC would not collapse its structure for any other party.

Director said the NDC remains focused on its presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso and will not withdraw from the ADC or any other party.

He said that the ADC presidential candidate’s spokesman, Kenneth Okonkwo, has made a series of unpleasant comments against NDC flagbearer, Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabi’u Kwankwaso.

According to him, the silence of the NDC should not be taken as a sign of weakness or inability to respond but an attempt to uphold a gentleman’s agreement among opposition parties to avoid infighting.

The NDC’s mouthpiece urged the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, to hold provocative spokespersons accountable to maintain political decorum and prevent unnecessary escalation.

“The spokespersons of the ADC, especially Kenneth Okonkwo, are throwing insults at the NDC and making derogatory statements about the NDC. We are capable of responding disproportionately.

"We are aware that the ADC-PCC may try to mislead our supporters on the eve of the election by claiming that we intend to withdraw in their favour. Let me state clearly and unequivocally: we will not withdraw our candidature for the ADC or any other party," he said.

This is coming amid a public war of words between the two opposition parties.

The rift deepened after NDC vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, in a recent interview, confirmed he asked former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to step down for the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket.
